SPECIALIZED ACADEMIC PROGRAMS
The Gifted Program is an educational program for students identified as gifted in grades PreK-12. Classes provide a high degree of complexity and extend beyond the prescribed curriculum offered in regular classes. Classes are taught by teachers certified in Gifted Education or working on their certification and have reduced class size (23:1) in order to individualize each student’s educational program. Students have been evaluated and identified as gifted by Pupil Appraisal Services. Students with a Gifted exceptionality have an Individual Education Program (IEP) and are a part of Exceptional Student Services.
SCHOLASTIC ACADEMY PROGRAM
Students meeting Scholastic Academy criteria benefit from exposure to a gifted self-contained environment. A composite score at the 90th percentile or above on a district IQ test is recommended for self-contained SA placement. Scholastic Academy students are in gifted classes and participate in the same curriculum as gifted identified students. If students participated in the program in elementary school then they are only eligible for one year of participation in middle school. During their second year in the program they are evaluated by pupil appraisal to determine if they meet gifted criteria. If they do not meet gifted criteria they will not be able to participate in gifted classes the following school year. They may participate in Great Scholars the next year if they meet the criteria. Only students entering from out of parish, out of state, out of the country or from private or parochial school can enter the program in the 7th and 8th grades. All SA students have a contract that is signed by the parents yearly.
GREAT SCHOLARS ACADEMY
Great Scholars Academy is a fairly new accelerated program with highly qualified teachers and a rigorous curriculum for 6th – 12th graders. This program parallels the gifted program, but the Great Scholars will be in their own separate classes. Great Scholars do not participate in gifted classes. Class size is 23:1. Students must maintain and overall 2.5 GPA or higher to continue in the program. Students must meet one or more of the following for admission into the program. They must have scored at the 84th percentile or higher on a district approved intelligence test or have two masteries or above in two subject areas on a recent standardized test in math, reading, science, and/or social studies administered within the last 12 months. Students considering the GS program have to submit an application that has to be approved by the EBRP Gifted office. This program was originally created to accommodate those SA students who did not pass the gifted evaluation but were too advanced to return to the traditional classroom.
